Mr. Terwilliger started swimming competitively when he was nine years old. In high school he was on the varsity soccer and varsity swim team for four years. In college he played water polo and swam as a utility swimmer, swimming the butterfly and 200 and 400 IM and back stroke. Earning a degree in Wood Products Engineering, Mr. Terwilliger worked in the wood industry for six years. After that Mr. Terwilliger went into the field of park supervision, supervising 400 acres of park land. He helped design an aquatic facility for that local park system. After six years Mr. Terwilliger went to Vermont to work as the Assistant Director for recreation where he coached the number one age group swim team in the state for two years. When his wife was hired as the Director of Community Health and Education for the Dutchess County Red Cross, Mr. Terwilliger went to work for the American Red Cross in Greater New York as the senior Aquatic Specialist, writing aquatic program and training Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors. In 1998 Mr. Terwilliger became the Director of Aquatics for the Poughkeepsie City School District where he is still employed. Mr. Terwilliger has coached boys and girl’s soccer, boys and girls alpine skiing, and boys and girls swimming and diving both at the age group and high school level. Mr. Terwilliger began coaching at Arlington in 2001 when his son Owen was a senior on the team.
Mr. Terwilliger has been awarded the Poughkeepsie Journal Coach of the Year for both his boys and girls swim teams. In 2004 Mr. Terwilliger was awarded the Fritz Jordan Coach of the Year for the Arlington School District, one of his most special moments ever. Mr. Terwilliger has lived in the Town of Poughkeepsie for 18 years with his wife Pam and son Owen who was from AHS class 2002. Mr. Terwilliger can be reached at rterwill@pcsd.k12.ny.us.
